Sleep apnea – doctor recommends having part of the soft palate removed – has any one had this done? Results?

Question by AngG: Sleep apnea – doctor recommends having part of the soft palate removed – has any one had this done? Results?
My husband went to the Ear Nose and Throat doctor to discuss options to improve his quality of sleep and lessen his snoring. The doctor wants to perform a tonsillectomy, re-set his deviated septum, and surgically trim his soft palate. We’ve got a second opinion scheduled for next week, but my husband is understandably nervous. Has any one else had this procedure performed? Were the results what you had hoped for? Was recovery difficult?

Answer by travelling to Nineveh
My husband uses a device called a CPAP (sp?) machine. See if he can try that first.

Sleep apnea is very dangerous. It can lead to strokes.

Question by momofemj: Can sleep apnea cause palpitations during the day?
My heart skips beats all through the day, and my
heart rate stays well above one hundred all of the
time. I have been to a cardiologist, and he gave me
a stress test and a ultrasound of my heart. Every
thing came back normal. So, I would like to know
what is causing this because it is driving me crazy!!
I have a history of sleep apnea, but I am not sure if
this is the problem.

Untreated sleep apnea can cause all sorts of problems, both physical and emotional. Your organs, such as your heart, simply do not get enough oxygen to function well. It may be that you also have anxiety, which can also cause palpitations. You really ought to be tested for sleep apnea in a sleep lab, and then get a CPAP machine to wear over your nose at night. You will feel better within a week or so, and the distressing symptoms will go away. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. My very best wishes to you.

Question by miraclethree: Can a sleep clinic diagnosis heart problems? (please note, sleep apnea is NOT the problem)?
My three year old niece was sent to a sleep clinic because sleep apnea was suspected. After the test the nurse told her mother she saw no signs of it. A few days later she received a call that she must come in April 9 to discuss some serious results. My niece has a heart murmur so we’re wondering if the test could have detected problems with her heat.

what should i expect if i am going to a sleep clinic for sleep apnea testing?

Question by : what should i expect if i am going to a sleep clinic for sleep apnea testing?
what if i cant sleep because of all the weird machines atached to me and the weird environment? what are u suppsoed to bring? what if you have to pee in the middle of the night? are there ppl monitoring you in the night or just machines?

Best answer:

Answer by Pookie
they have people there to monitor you, and the machines will record the information they need. If you have to go the bathroom, get up and go as you normally would. The only thing I would do differently, is bring PJ’s..I dont quite sleep in enough clothing nightly lol, sooo think about that too!

My nephew goes for them and my moms has been a few times, maybe try to wake up early the day of and be active so you will be tired and ready to bed

Can sleep apnea cause headaches during the day?

Question by Daniel: Can sleep apnea cause headaches during the day?
I have sleep apnea…or atleast I think I do. People tell me that when I sleep, I stop breathing for awhile and make noises like I am choking. Is this sleep apnea? And if it is, does it cause headaches throughout the day? Because I have headaches almost everyday and I can’t think of what causes them.

Best answer:

Answer by the_only_solorose
sleep apnea can most assuredly cause headaches, and severe fatigue and heart disease. Suggest you have a sleep study and get that treated.

Q&A: What causes obstructive sleep apnea in children that already have their adenoids & tonsils out?

Question by Its Private: What causes obstructive sleep apnea in children that already have their adenoids & tonsils out?
If adenoids and tonsils are out, what is the treatment? CPAP only?

Best answer:

Answer by inzanium
Although adenoids and tonsils are the most common cause, problems with deviated septum, collapseable soft tissue in the neck, and underbite can be causes as well, and may be amendable to treatment surgically.

CPAP is a good treatment, but if there’s any other surgical intervention it should be considered first especially for someone young.

What do you know about sleep apnea surgeries?

Question by lucky: What do you know about sleep apnea surgeries?
I hate the mask (as many people do). I have severe obstructive sleep apnea. I am considering surgical options but I’ve been told the only one that may work for me is the mandibular advancement (when they break your jaw and move it forward). Has anyone had this before? What were your experiences? Did it work? Do you know of any other surgery that may help? Oral appliances?

Question by Glornak 7: Is sleep apnea a condition your born with or can u develop it?
I used to sleep through the night without waking up most of the time. Now I wake up maybe 3 or 4 times a night. I never get restful sleep. I also experience a lot of sleep paralysis. Could this be linked to sleep apnea?

Best answer:

Answer by Lynnie
Sometimes sleep apnea is caused by obesity so yes you can develop it.
Also it is more common in older men and hardly ever in young boys so that is a yes to developing it also.
What you are describing sounds more like a type of insomnia. Middle insomnia if you are waking up in the middle of the night. Is there something that is making your mind busy or agitated at night instead of being calm?
The sleep paralysis sounds to me like your brain woke up and got alert while your body is still asleep.
The last thing that shuts down before you sleep is the switchover to autonomous physical activity – meaning the conscious physical ability is turned off last – bottomline you are aware but not fully awake physically.
Yoga and relaxation techniques may help you.

Sleep apnea is quite different – the person stops breathing continually maybe every minute or so and is jerking themself awake when they want to get breathing again.

Layman’s description – hope it worked.

by SSC Liaison

Question by Fred: Does aeviated septum and obstructive sleep apnea make excercise (running) difficult?
I have a deviated septum, one of my nostrils is almost completly closed. I also have obstructive sleep apnea (too much tissue in my throat). I’m trying to start running but when I reach about a mile I have shortness of breath. Could this be the cause?

Best answer:

Answer by Canadian♥Snowbunny
You definately will have breathing issues but you can learn to breathe in and out of your mouth to overcome that, also be sure to start your pace slowly. Failure to do so will just cause you to get out of breathe quicker.

Good luck!
